But he started his working life as a teenager not in an office, or at a university, but as a ringer.
At odds with the expectations of his strict German parents, Roland had fallen in love with the idea of being a cowboy, and so left home at 15 and became a stockman in the Gulf country of North Queensland.
There, in the majesty and extremity of the outback, Roland caught bullocks by the tail, slept in a swag under the stars, met eccentric characters and worked out who he was.
