7:24Now PlayingThe Great Wheelbarrow Race in Mareeba attracts people from across the region, raising money for worthy causes, and providing participants with fun and physical activity.
ABC presenter Joe O’Brien describes the buzz “like a mix between Comic-Con, Mardi Gras and a rugby league grand final”.
As part of Backroads, Joe followed various teams along the “Wheelbarrow Way”, including a trio who call themselves “Missy’s Donors”.
Missy’s Donors are racing to promote blood and plasma donation and to honour a beloved friend, Missy Clarkson.
Missy was diagnosed with leukemia when she was just nine years old.
Before Missy died in 2020, and though her health was fragile, she helped start Missy's Donors, a campaign to get more people donating blood.
“How amazing is it that you can save three lives with one donation?” Missy said.
“Donations are so important, especially for people like me. A big thank you to everybody who donates and everybody who makes this happen.”
