Crisp first shot to fame with The Naked Civil Servant, a candid memoir about life as an openly gay man in Britain when homosexuality was heavily stigmatised.
It was Crisp’s razor-sharp wit and unapologetic approach to life that made them a celebrated performer and raconteur around the world.
In 1978, Crisp arrived in Australia for an eight-week national tour, packing in a busy schedule of TV and radio appearances.
Decades after becoming famous, at age 90, Crisp wrote that they had finally come to understand themselves as transgender, reflecting on a lifelong desire to have been born a woman.
As she put it: “If it's confusing for you, think how confusing it has been for me these past ninety years.”
