10:59Now PlayingPrime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party won reelection in India. And while the results were closer than many were expecting, a third Modi term is making many of the country’s Muslims fearful.
In the months leading up to the election, Muslim citizens faced hate speech from government officials, harassment at polling stations, police killings and the destruction of holy sites.
While opposition parties did score victories in regions with larger Muslim populations, it wasn’t enough to oust Modi from power. Over the last 10 years, anti-Muslim policies by the BJP government have left many members of the country’s largest religious minority even more marginalized. Muslim residents we spoke to say that the atmosphere of fear is still very present.
