The city is in the depths of a housing crisis, with rising rents and gentrification forcing people into homelessness. One group of activists decided to take action, and turned a derelict old building into homes for people being pushed out of their city.
Yara Elmjouie goes inside the occupation to meet the residents and activists defying the threat of eviction as they stand against displacement, and work to create affordable housing in the heart of Cape Town.
Note: South Africans say "Coloured" in reference to a Creole minority who, for many years, had been the majority of Capetonians.
