6:42Now PlayingIn the year 744CE, Marwan II ascended to the throne of the caliphate. Little did he know that he would be the last Umayyad to do so.
The Umayyads had ruled the empire for almost a century, since Muawiyah I ascended to the caliphate in 661CE. Since then, their corruption, bigotry and decadence had alienated the non-Arab majority of the empire especially the Persians. On top of that, they assassinated one of their most popular rulers, Umar II.
All of these factors led to the rise of a new dynasty. One that was promised to return the empire to the days of Umar and Ali. The fabled State of Medina, as it's often called these days. This new dynasty was descended from Muhammad's own uncle, Al-Abbas.
On 25th of January, 750CE, the Abbasids sealed the fate of the Umayyads and took over the empire, starting a new era.
