as posted by the channelAt the time of Abd al-Rahman’s death, his succession plan wasn’t clear. It was obvious that he wanted one of his sons to succeed but which one? Abd al-Rahman had three potential successors. Sulayman, Hisham and Abdullah. Abdullah was young and wasn’t a serious enough candidate. The other two, Sulayman and Hisham were both away from Cordoba when Abd al-Rahman died. Some sources say that Hisham was his first choice while others say that he wanted his titles inherited by whichever of his sons reached Cordoba first.
Additional Facts:
1) Hisham’s campaign into France didn’t result in any territorial changes but did lead to quite a bit of loot. This money was used by Hisham to expand Mezquita de Córdoba, the Grand Mosque of Cordoba, which was built by his father, Abd al-Rahman.
2) Abd al-Rahman was made aware of this raid by the ruler of Lisbon who had previously been attacked. However, the ruler of Lisbon was able to fend off the attack as well and warn Abd al-Rahman in time to be able to defend himself.
3) This famous Viking Ring with the word, “Allah” written on it in Arabic probably has something to do with Al Andalus. The person whom the ring belonged to might’ve been a Viking who converted to Islam or was born a Muslim.
