12:45Now PlayingIn the early ninth century, the Abbasid Caliphate was just coming out of a long and bloody civil war. After Harun al-Rashid’s plan of succession failed spectacularly, his two sons picked up the sword for their claim to the throne of the Caliphate. All edges of the caliphate parcelled out of control but eventually, al-Amin (الامین) was killed by al-Mamun’s forces and al-Mamun (المامون) was installed as the sole caliph. After having ruled from Merv, in the distant province of Khorasan, for six years, he decided to return to Baghdad, the city founded by his great-grandfather, al-Mansur.
