22:46Now PlayingSaladin is perhaps the most famous figure from Islamic History after Prophet Muhammad and some companions. He’s certainly one of the most popular and respected sultans. He finds admiration, not just from the Muslim world but also from the European chroniclers. Muslims, both modern and contemporary, see him as a great warrior who conquered Jerusalem from the Christians Franks, 88 years after it was first captured by the Crusaders during the First Crusade. Christians, for ages, saw him as a generous and fair man, an enemy for sure, but a chivalrous and merciful one with all the qualities that European knights were supposed to have. He is one of only a handful of figures who get some respect in contemporary and late medieval Christian sources — something not even Prophet Muhammad gets and certainly no other King of the Muslims gets. He is often contrasted with the Crusaders, who are seen as being brutal and bloodthirsty, which, in my opinion, is a bit of a simplistic view. Today, we’re going to talk about this extraordinary man, Sultan Salah ud-Din Ayyubi, the Conqueror of Jerusalem.
