As the story of clerical sex abuse continues to rock the U.S. church, we look to a country that has been dealing with the repercussions of its own sex abuse scandal—Australia.
Cardinal George Pell is currently facing charges of sexual abuse, the highest ranking Vatican official ever to be prosecuted. Anger about the crisis has escalated so much that the government is now pushing for priests to violate the seal of confession and report instances of child sexual abuse heard during confession. The church has also been threatened with a revocation of its non-profit tax status. Where does the church go from here and will the U.S. church soon be facing the same issues?
