16:50Now PlayingToday, top U.S. bishops met with Pope Francis to discuss the ongoing sex abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. A statement from the U.S.C.C.B. described the meeting as a “lengthy, fruitful and good exchange” and said the bishops told Francis how the church in the United States has been “lacerated by the evil of sexual abuse.”
The private encounter came a day after Pope Francis summoned the president of every bishops’ conference in the world to a meeting at the Vatican on the theme of “the protection of minors.” The meeting, set to take place in February 2019, is believed to be the first of its kind, and represents a recognition at the highest levels of the church that sexual abuse of children by clergy is a global problem.
