Sean Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y., questioned former special counsel Robert Mueller during his July 24 testimony before the House Intelligence Committee about why he did not subpoena the president during his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential elections. The special counsel “did not want to exercise the subpoena powers,” Mueller said, particularly out of the interest of time, because “if we did subpoena the president, he would fight the subpoena” and it would drag on the investigation. Mueller said that the written interview he ultimately got from the president was “not as useful as the interview would be.”
