Rep. Michael Turner, R-Ohio, said it was "amazing" that the first people testifying in the first public hearing in the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump were two people who have never had contact with the president himself. George Kent, deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, and Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, testified before the House Intelligence Committee on Nov.13. The probe centers around a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Both Kent and Taylor testified to lawmakers in October behind closed doors. When asked whether Kurt Volker, the former U.S. envoy to Ukraine who was mentioned in the whistleblower complaint, committed perjury in his testimony to the committee, both said he did not.
