Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., questioned George Kent, deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, and Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, in the first public hearing in the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. The probe centers around a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Both Kent and Taylor testified to lawmakers in October behind closed doors. Himes, said that the GOP claims that then-Vice President Biden and Trump have done similar things regarding using their offices to influence U.S. policy toward Ukraine. Kent said they were not the same, clarifying that Biden requested the removal of a corrupt Ukrainian prosecutor general who had "undermined" a U.S. taxpayer-paid program of assistance in Ukraine.
