Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, questioned Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, an Army officer who works for the National Security Council, and Jennifer Williams, an aide to Vice President Mike Pence, on Nov. 19, in a public hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. Castro mentions an assertion from President Donald Trump that the Ukrainian government interfered in the 2016 election. "This is a debunked conspiracy theory that has no basis in fact," Castro said. Castro then asked Vindman if he was aware of any evidence of this. "I am not, and furthermore, I would say this is a Russian narrative that President [Vladimir] Putin has promoted," he said. Vindman also said he wasn't aware if other parts of the U.S. government intelligence that supported that theory. Vindman and Williams both listened in on a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
