Democratic counsel Daniel Goldman questioned Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, an Army officer who works for the National Security Council, and Jennifer Williams, an aide to Vice President Mike Pence, on Nov. 19, in a public hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. Goldman asked what Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, said when Ukrainian officials raised the idea of a White House meeting. Vindman said Sondland referred to "specific investigations that Ukrainians would have to deliver in order to get this White House meeting." Vindman said former national security adviser John Bolton then abruptly ended the meeting. In a short, follow-up meeting, Vindman said Sondland elaborated on the "investigations," saying the ambassador specified a probe into the Bidens and Burisma.
"I said that these requests to conduct these investigations was inappropriate and had nothing to do with national security policy," Vindman said. Vindman and Williams both listened in on a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
