Rep. Denny Heck, D-Wash., asked David Hale, the undersecretary of state for political affairs, to send a message to the foreign service corps about former Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, who was fired by President Donald Trump earlier this year. During his questioning, Heck asked if Hale, who in his opening statement offered more details about Yovanovitch's removal, wanted to take the opportunity to send a "clear and resounding message" to his State Department colleagues that what happened to Yovanovitch was wrong, Hale said he was impressed with Yovanovitch and her work. "We had an exceptional officer doing exceptional work," Hale said of Yovanovitch, who previously testified about the smear campaign against her, led by Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani. "And what happened to her was wrong?” Heck asked. “That's right,” Hale said.
