Rep. Jerry Nadler, the House Judiciary Committee chair, asked Noah Feldman, a Harvard law professor, why impeachment was the “appropriate recourse” and why it cannot wait until the next election. Feldman said the framers “reserved impeachment for
situations where the president abused his office. That is, used it for his
personal advantage.” He added that they were also “specifically worried” about
a situation where the president used his office to “facilitate corruptly his
own re-election.” Feldman also said that the facts presented in these
impeachment proceedings show that President Donald Trump used the power of his
office in a situation that’s “precisely what the framers anticipated.” The Dec. 4 questioning came on the first day of public
hearings by the House Judiciary Committee as part of the impeachment inquiry
into President Donald Trump. The focus of the Judiciary hearing, which came
after the House Intelligence Committee had hearings in late November, is to
define the grounds for a presidential impeachment.
