Moderators asked former Vice President Joe Biden to explain his position that there would be a “return” to normalcy during a Biden administration in terms of working across the aisle. “Normal is not enough. We have to move beyond normal, whether it’s health care, the environment, whatever it is,” he said. “We have to build on what we had started in our administration and that’s been interrupted very badly.” Biden said without Donald Trump in office, he won’t be able to intimidate his base. “I refuse to accept the notion that we can never, never get to a place where we have cooperation again,” he said. “If that’s the case, we’re dead as a country. We need to be able to reach consensus.” Biden is one of the seven Democrats vying for their party's 2020 presidential nomination who met on the stage for the sixth Democratic debate on Dec. 19, hosted by the PBS NewsHour and POLITICO.
