In a bipartisan question, Sens. Gary Peters, D-Mich., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, asked both President Donald Trump's lawyers and House managers how an acquittal in the impeachment trial could affect the balance of power between legislative and executive branches in the future. White House counsel Pat Cipollone, White House counsel, said an acquittal would be the "best thing for our country and would send a great message that will help in our separation of powers." Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said there would be an "irrevocable change" to the balance of power. “If we hold that a president can defy all subpoenas ... it will eviscerate our oversight power," he said. Senators were given a second day to ask questions of the House managers and Trump’s legal team on Thursday, Jan. 30. That came after both sides were given three days, respectively, to present their case. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles -- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The questions come ahead of a vote on whether to bring forward witnesses and documents as part of the Senate trial. The Senate must now decide whether to acquit the president or convict him of the charges and remove him from office.
