Harkening back to a famous quote by Ben Franklin, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said in his closing statement in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump that, "Year after year, decade after decade, century after century, we've held this democracy thing together. But now, all of those ideas, all of those values, all of those institutions are under assault. Not from without, but from within." He warned that if the Senate voted to acquit the president, and normalize "lawlessness," then America would be "in the wilderness." But, he said, "all is not lost, even at this late hour, the Senate can still do the right thing." House managers and the president’s legal team are each delivering their closing arguments in the impeachment trial on Feb. 3 before senators began to weigh in with debate on whether to remove Trump from office. In December, the House of Representatives charged him with two articles of impeachment -- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. After the Senate on Friday voted to bar new witness testimony and subpoenas for documents, Trump’s acquittal has seemed all but assured.
