YouTube Description
as posted by the channelSen. Patty Murray, D-Washington, said on May 12 that it was “absolutely crucial” that planning for the development and distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S. “recognizes and addresses racial and ethnic disparities in our health care system.” She then asked National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci what steps the NIH is taking to make sure that clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics account for racial and ethnic disparities.
Fauci responded that the design of the clinical vaccine trials, and the sites chosen for said trials, would be “representative” of minority and at-risk populations. “It’s something we started back in the days of HIV when we tried to get good demographic representation, and we’re going to do that with these trials,” Fauci said.
Leading U.S. health officials on Tuesday appeared before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions to answer questions about safely reopening schools and workplaces. In addition to Dr. Fauci, Centers on Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn and Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services for Health Adm. Brett Giroir also spoke before the committee.
