1:14Now PlayingTrump’s message of law and order as a means of appealing to white voters is nothing new, Princeton University African American studies professor Eddie Glaude, Jr. told PBS NewsHour political reporter Daniel Bush. He said that President Richard Nixon also made law and order a critical part of his campaigns in 1968 and 1972, when there were civil rights protests happening in the U.S., as a way to stoke fear among the suburban white electorate. For Trump, "all of this is about in some ways activating white fear, activating white resentment” in order to expand his appeal among disaffected white voters, Glaude said. He spoke with Bush about race and the presidency on the night of the first 2020 presidential debate, Sept. 29.
