1:29Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump said at the first presidential debate of 2020 that he wears masks to protect himself from COVID-19 when he feels he needs it.
In response, Biden cited the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention telling Congress that if everyone wore a mask America could save up to “100,000 lives.” Interrupting, Trump said that Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, had said "the opposite" then changed his mind.
The CDC has changed its novel coronavirus guidelines over the past several months, initially advising the public that people did not need to wear masks to protect themselves and others from the virus. Recent research suggests the virus can be spread through the air from miniscule droplets from people's noses and mouths.
Trump and Biden faced off in their first debate on Sept. 29, in front of a crowd that was dramatically scaled back because of COVID-19. Thirty-five days before Election Day, the candidates were expected to cover a range of topics, from the pandemic and the economy to protests over police violence.
