Trump’s defense lawyers argued that finding the president guilty would be unconstitutional because he is no longer in office. Democratic House managers argued that presidents cannot be allowed to break the law in the final days of their administrations without consequences.
The Senate held the first day of the impeachment trial on Monday February 9 to debate whether or not the proceedings were constitutional. Trump was impeached by the House last month while still in office, making him the first president ever to be impeached twice.
