Jamie Raskin, D-Md., spoke Feb. 10 as House impeachment managers made their case for why the Senate should convict former President Donald Trump on a charge of inciting insurrection during the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
Raskin, the lead House impeachment manager, laid out the evidence he and other house managers will draw upon to support their argument that Trump willfully incited a violent mob to storm the Capitol, including the former president’s own words and those of fellow Republicans officials.
He played clips from the video Trump released several hours after the insurrection, in which the former president repeats the falsehood that the 2020 presidential election was illegitimate, a claim widely considered to have fueled the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
“If anyone ever had a doubt as to his focus that day, it was not to defend us, it was not to console us. It was to praise and sympathize and commiserate with the rampaging mob,” Raskin said on the Senate floor. “It was to continue to act as inciter in chief — not commander in chief — by telling the mob that their election had been stolen from them.”
