Stacey Plaskett, D-Virgin Islands, spoke Feb. 10 as House Democrats made their case for why the Senate should convict former President Donald Trump on a charge of inciting insurrection during the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
Plaskett argued that the former president and his team were “directly involved” in organizing his supporters ahead of the Capitol attack. She cited evidence like a December tweet from Trump that referenced a “big protest in D.C.” planned for Jan. 6.
“Donald Trump, over many months, cultivated violence, praised it, and then when he saw the violence his supporters were capable of, he channeled it to his big, wild, historic event,” Plaskett said on the Senate floor.
