Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, spoke Feb. 11 as House impeachment managers continued to present evidence for why the Senate should convict former President Donald Trump of inciting an insurrection for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
Castro sought to explain how the attack threatened national security, citing one mob member who took House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s laptop with the intention of selling it to someone in Russia.
“Past behavior of some individuals led here by President Trump so alarmed investigators that their names had been added to the national terrorist screening,” Castro said. “While we can’t be certain if or how many foreign spies infiltrated the crowd ... we can be sure that any enemy who wanted access to our secrets would have wanted to be part of that mob inside these halls.”
