Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., spoke Feb. 11 as House impeachment managers continued to present evidence for why the Senate should convict former President Donald Trump of inciting an insurrection for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
Cicilline focused on the trauma caused to everyone inside the Capitol during the attack, noting that it was not just elected officials and Capitol police officers put in danger by the riot, but also staffers, journalists, food service workers and janitorial staff. He also noted the unique trauma experienced by people of color inside the Capitol where some insurrectionists were carrying Confederate flags and shouting racial slurs.
“We can never allow the kind of attack that happened on January 6 to happen in this country ever again,” he said.
