4:57Now PlayingSens. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, and Susan Collins, R-Maine, asked a question on Feb. 12 to the House impeachment managers, who are arguing that the Senate should convict former President Donald Trump on the charge that he incited the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
“When President Trump sent the disparaging tweet at 2:24 p.m. regarding Vice President Pence, was he aware that vice president had been removed from the Senate by the Secret Service for his safety?” the senators asked.
House impeachment manager Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, responded, “The whole world knew it. All of us knew it. Live television had by this point shown that the insurgents were already inside the building and that they had weapons and that the police were outnumbered.”
But Trump’s defense team countered that “at no point was the president informed the vice president was in any danger because the House rushed through this impeachment and seven days with no evidence.”
The opposing sides spoke during the fourth day of the Senate impeachment trial against Trump. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
