Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., gave a closing statement on June 23 as the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack presented its findings to the public.

Former top Justice Department officials provided roughly two hours of testimony, detailing how they questioned and pushed back on former President Donald Trump’s pressure campaign to change the outcome of the 2020 election. They threatened to resign en masse if the former president decided to overhaul the department’s leadership by appointing another DOJ official Jeffrey Clark, who was willing to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the election results without evidence.

“President Trump tried to erase his loss at the ballot box by parachuting an unqualified man into the top job at justice. It was a power play to win at all costs, with no regard for the will of the American people. It was about ignoring millions of votes,” Kinzinger said.

Kinzinger said the country owed “a great debt of gratitude” to the DOJ officials who refused Trump’s demands.

“Real leaders who stood for justice when it was in grave peril. Who put their country first when the leader of the free world demanded otherwise. They threatened to resign rather than corrupt our democracy and thanks largely to each of them, President Trump's coup failed.”

The hearing, the fifth of several planned by the Jan. 6 committee, focused on Trump’s pressure on the Department of Justice to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. In the year since its creation, the committee has conducted more than 1,000 interviews, seeking critical information and documents from people witness to, or involved in, the violence that day.
