2:01Now PlayingIn his State of the Union address Tuesday, President Joe Biden said Congress should pass legislation to stop social media companies from collecting personal data on children, saying Big Tech is experimenting on children for profit.
The remarks, which received bipartisan applause, came as Biden said the nation needs to improve mental health care.
Biden said he wants to “ban targeted advertising to children and impose stricter limits on the personal data that companies collect on all of us.”
He also noted that 17 veterans a day end their own lives and said Veterans Affairs is working to expand mental health screening.
The VA is using “proven programs that recruits veterans to help other veterans understand what they’re going through and get them the help they need,” Biden said.
Biden’s Feb. 7 address comes a year after Russia invaded Ukraine and amid new diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and China over a suspected surveillance balloon. This is Biden’s second State of the Union address, as his first was a joint address to Congress in April 2021.
Last year, Biden used his address to emphasize themes of bipartisanship and unity. But he now faces a split Congress, with the GOP-led House launching efforts to investigate his family and his administration.
