2:25Now PlayingIn his 2023 State of the Union speech, President Joe Biden called on Congress to support antitrust legislation aimed at stopping “big online platforms from giving their products an unfair advantage.”
The president added that his administration is also cracking down on so-called “junk fees,” or hidden surcharges that can result in consumers paying more than they initially expect because of these hidden fees. He specifically called out airline ticket prices, overdraft fees, credit card late fines and service fees for concert tickets and sporting events.
“Americans are tired of being played for suckers,” Biden said, asking Congress to “pass the Junk Free Prevention Act so companies stop ripping us off.”
Biden’s Feb. 7 address is his second State of the Union address, as his first was a joint address to Congress in April 2021.
Last year, Biden used his address to emphasize themes of bipartisanship and unity. But he now faces a split Congress, with the GOP-led House launching efforts to investigate his family and his administration.
