11:31Now PlayingRep. Maria Salazar of Florida says former President Donald Trump 'is a new person internally' after an assassination attempt against him at a rally in Pennsylvania.
On the second night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Salazar told PBS News that "when you are exposed to this type of incident where you understand that .... you could have lost your life in that minute, he now understands that the Almighty and the powers from heaven gave him another opportunity. Which is a fantastic experience to go through and that will definitely make him a different person, therefore, we'll have a different party."
She described Trump now as "maybe not spiritual, maybe not religious," but certainly more "contemplative."
Salazar also spoke about the selection of Sen. JD Vance as vice president, being a part of the "red wave" of Republican women in Congress in 2020 and the bipartisan immigration reform plan that Trump pressured House Republicans to reject.
"Too little too late at the time," Salazar said, adding that she saw it as "just a little patch" rather than something "real and deep."
"Immigration is something that is very toxic. .... You need to have the political willingness to really sit at the table, Democrats and Republicans, and try to solve, starting with the undocumented," Salazar said.
