1:46Now PlayingFormer President Donald Trump said Thursday that “the presidency was taken away” from President Joe Biden after the president dropped his reelection bid earlier this summer. Biden dropped out of the 2024 race before the Democratic Party certified its nominee and swiftly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place at the top of the party ticket.
During a wide-ranging, hourlong news conference at his Florida compound, Mar-A-Lago, Trump questioned why Harris is able to ascend to the top of the Democratic ticket when she did not receive votes during the Democratic caucus and primary process earlier this year.
Had Biden not dropped out of the race in July, he would have become the party’s official nominee during the delegate roll call process, which took place virtually earlier this month. The Constitution does not govern how the political parties award delegates.
The Democratic Party announced Tuesday that Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, were officially certified as the nominees for president and vice president and that they both accepted the nominations. “The virtual roll call ensured that the Harris-Walz ticket has met all ballot access deadlines and every American will have the opportunity to vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the general election,” the party said in a statement.
Separately, ABC News confirmed that Trump and Harris will take part in a debate hosted by the network on Sept. 10.
