3:57Now PlayingFormer first lady Michelle Obama said she wanted to speak at the Democratic National Convention in her hometown of Chicago on Tuesday to honor the memory of her late mother who died in May.
“I still feel her loss so profoundly. I wasn't even sure if I'd be steady enough to stand before you tonight,” Obama said of her mother, Marian Robinson. “But my heart compelled me to be here because of the sense of duty that I feel to honor her memory, and to remind us all not to squander the sacrifices our elders made to give us a better future.”
She said her mother believed in the value of each person, and thought everyone could succeed if given the opportunity. Obama recounted her mother volunteering at the local school and looked out for other children in their neighborhood.
“She was glad to do the thankless, unglamorous work that for generations has strengthened the fabric of this nation: The belief that if you do unto others, if you love thy neighbor, if you work and scrape and sacrifice, it will pay off — if not for you, then maybe for your children or your grandchildren,” Obama said.
The second night of the DNC was devoted to bringing “bold vision” to America’s future and a new generation of Democratic leadership. Later in the week, Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will formally accept their nominations as the party’s candidates.
