1:40Now PlayingOhio Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz traded arguments Tuesday night on what’s driving up the cost of housing, with Vance blaming immigrants and federal regulations.
“We should get out of this idea of housing as a commodity, but the thing that has most turned housing into a commodity is giving it away to millions upon millions of people who have no legal right to be here,” Vance said.
He also said the federal government’s regulations are too stringent to allow builders to construct housing. Walz rebutted that argument by saying he agreed some regulations could be loosened, but that most are made at the local and state level. He noted that the executive branch doesn’t create building codes.
“Which are the regulations? Because the vice president's not responsible for those. Congress writes those,” Walz said.
With just more than a month to go before Election Day Vance and Walz met for their first and only vice presidential debate on Oct. 1, hosted by CBS in New York.
