WATCH: Democratic senators ask whether U.S. will ignore the 'suffering before our very eyes' in Gaza

Four Democratic senators have announced they will introduce a resolution calling on the Biden administration to enforce a U.S. law that would restrict the sale of some offensive weapons to Israel because of human rights abuses conducted during its war against Hamas in Gaza.

Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., said in a Tuesday news conference that while the U.S. should continue to support Israel’s security, it was also obliged to respond to the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza.

“Is the United States and its foreign policy, with that commitment we’ve had to Israel, forced to be blind to the suffering before our very eyes — particularly when it's our munitions being used?” Welch said.

Welch was joined by fellow Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, along with Sens. Chris van Hollen of Maryland and Jeff Merkley of Oregon.

“Clearly what is happening in Gaza today is unspeakable. But what makes it even more painful is that much of what is happening there has been done with U.S. weapons and with American taxpayer support,” Sanders said.

“The United States of America is complicit in these atrocities. That complicity must end. And that is what these resolutions are about.”

Last week, the State Department said Israel had made more progress in allowing more aid into Gaza even as it continues its attack in the territory.

“We at this time have not made an assessment that the Israelis are in violation of U.S. law,” State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel said.

Aid organizations have said Palestinians in Gaza are in dire conditions, including a food crisis.
