9:13Now PlayingVice President Kamala Harris paid tribute to former President Jimmy Carter during a memorial ceremony Jan. 7 at the U.S. Capitol.
She highlighted Carter’s accomplishments during his time in office, including his appointment of more Black judges to the federal bench “than all of his predecessors combined” and the 1978 Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt.
“Jimmy Carter was that all-too-rare example of a gifted man who also walks with humility, modesty and grace,” Harris said.
Speakers at the service also included Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who praised Carter’s work with Habitat for Humanity, and House Speaker Mike Johnson, who remembered Carter as someone “who modeled the values of service and citizenship as well as any other American.”
Carter will lie in state in the rotunda of the Capitol until Thursday, when his state funeral will take place at Washington National Cathedral.
