WATCH: House Speaker Mike Johnson eulogizes former President Jimmy Carter at Capitol ceremony

House Speaker Mike Johnson told the story of former President Jimmy Carter’s introduction to Habitat for Humanity, an enduring partnership that lasted for nearly the rest of his life, at a ceremony for the late president at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday.

Johnson recounted how a volunteer for the charity told Carter that if there was anything he could do, they’d take the help, and Carter responded he’d do what he could. The volunteer asked for volunteer carpenters from Carter’s church.

“It was the very next day that President Carter called Habitat for Humanity and told them he was going to send some carpenters all right, and that he himself would be one of them,” Johnson said.

Lawmakers gathered in the Capitol Rotunda Tuesday to eulogize Carter, who died Dec. 29 at age 100. Carter will lie in state until Thursday, when his funeral will be held at the National Cathedral in Washington. He will then return to the Carter estate in Georgia where he will be interred.
