10:51Now PlayingSpeaking at Jimmy Carter's funeral on Thursday, President Joe Biden said Carter established a "model post-presidency," noting that the former president made "a powerful difference as a private citizen" in the United States and around the world.
“Through it all, he showed us how character and faith start with ourselves and then flows to others,” Biden said.
After leaving office in 1981, Carter devoted his life to humanitarian projects, including building houses with Habitat for Humanity and the effort to eliminate Guinea worm disease, which plagued millions of people living in places with poor water quality.
Biden called Carter’s work a tribute made in “reverence for an incredible gift of life.”
“That's the definition of a good life," he said. "The life Jimmy Carter lived during his 100 years. To young people, anyone in search of meaning and purpose, study the power of Jimmy Carter's example."
In attendance at the funeral were Carter family members, world leaders and all five living U.S. presidents: Biden, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
The official state funeral in Washington on Thursday caps a long farewell that began — and will end — in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. Carter died Dec. 29 at age 100.
