3:22Now PlayingSen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., questioned defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth in a confirmation hearing Tuesday about what Hegseth has meant in the past when he has alluded to personal struggles.
Kelly, in rapid succession, asked Hegseth to respond true or false to accusations involving excessive alcohol use and sexual misconduct in work settings.
Over and over, Hegseth responded “anonymous smear.” Kelly noted when applicable when witnesses had made statements on the record about their own experiences with this behavior.
"Do you think that this behavior — of intoxication, going into these type of establishments, women on your staff being so uncomfortable that they have to file these sort of harassment claims — do you think this is appropriate behavior for a leader?" Kelly asked.
Hegseth is a military veteran and conservative media personality. President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary has faced allegations of sexual misconduct and excessive drinking, and been criticized as a nominee for his controversial views on diversity and religion in the military.
