7:13Now PlayingSen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., questioned defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth in a confirmation hearing Tuesday held by the Senate Committee on Armed Services.
After asking the nominee to describe his tattoos, Cramer disputed the idea that they could be connected to extremist group ideology.
"You, Mr. Hegseth, are not the extremist. The people who would deny you your expression of faith are the extremists. They're the racists, they're the bigots. You're the one that is protecting their right to be one. Thank you for that," Cramer said.
Hegseth is a military veteran and conservative media personality. President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary has faced allegations of sexual misconduct and excessive drinking, and been criticized as a nominee for his controversial views on diversity and religion in the military.
