2:47Now PlayingSen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., questioned defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth about his stance on women in the military and comments made as recently as November arguing that women were less qualified for combat roles.
“You also write in your book … ‘Not only are women comparatively less effective than men in combat roles, but they are more likely to be objectified by the enemy and their own nation in the moral realms of war,'” Shaheen said.
Hegseth said he appreciated the service of women. “It’s not about the capabilities of men or women, it's about standards," he said.
Hegseth is a military veteran and conservative media personality. President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary has faced allegations of sexual misconduct and excessive drinking, and been criticized as a nominee for his controversial views on diversity and religion in the military.
