2:10Now PlayingSen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., asked homeland security secretary nominee Kristi Noem in a confirmation hearing Friday held by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs about working with Native American tribes on the southern border.
Noem said that in her time as Republican governor of South Dakota, her administration trained federal and tribal police at no cost, which allowed law enforcement to build partnerships.
“I'd like to continue to build on that and perpetuate in the future so that our tribes have an opportunity to have a secure border, but also have it reflect their values and their culture and have their own people be a part of the solution,” she said.
Noem is a rancher and a former member of Congress. A close ally to Trump, Noem has called migration across the U.S. southern border “an invasion.” If confirmed, Noem would play a key role in carrying out his promised immigration crackdown by leading the Department of Homeland Security, one of the largest federal agencies.
