as posted by the channelSen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, questioned homeland security secretary nominee Kristi Noem in a confirmation hearing Friday held by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
Ernst asked Noem about Homeland Security’s role in government efficiency, specifically saying there needs to be revised telework and remote work policies for federal employees. This is an issue, Ernst said, that relates to cybersecurity.
“We need more people back in the offices, making sure that any communications are secured, any work is secured.”
The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, is a new, nongovernmental task force that seeks to advance advise President-elect Donald Trump on his agenda to cut down the federal workforce and regulations. Ernst is the chair of the Senate DOGE caucus.
Noem agreed with Ernst, adding that since she’s been nominated for homeland security secretary, she’s heard that “many of the agencies within the department are not showing up. They’re not doing their jobs.”
Noem, the Republican governor of South Dakota, is a rancher and a former member of Congress. A close ally to Trump, Noem has called migration across the U.S. southern border “an invasion.” If confirmed, Noem would play a key role in carrying out his promised immigration crackdown by leading the Department of Homeland Security, one of the largest federal agencies.
