1:19Now PlayingIn her opening statement, homeland security secretary nominee Kristi Noem said Friday in her confirmation hearing that border security “must remain a top priority.”
“As a nation, we have the right and the responsibility to secure our borders against those who would do us harm, and we must create a fair and a lawful immigration system that is efficient and is effective, and that reflects our values,” she said before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
Noem added that she would ensure that the agency’s immigration agents have the “resources and support they need to carry out their mission effectively.”
Noem, the Republican governor of South Dakota, is a rancher and a former member of Congress. A close ally to Trump, Noem has called migration across the U.S. southern border “an invasion.” If confirmed, Noem would play a key role in carrying out his promised immigration crackdown by leading the Department of Homeland Security, one of the largest federal agencies.
