2:17Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump said he has been “tested and challenged more than any president in our 250-year history” during his inauguration speech on Monday.
Trump cited the assassination attempt against him last year at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the multiple criminal investigations into over his actions around hush money payments, the handling of classified documents and efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
“The journey to reclaim our republic has not been an easy one, that I can tell you. Those who wish to stop our cause have tried to take my freedom, and indeed to take my life,” Trump said.
The inauguration ceremony, including the swearings-in, is taking place indoors this year, a last-minute change to the pomp and circumstance due to extreme cold forecasted for the nation’s capital.
When Trump returns to the White House on Monday, he’s expected to act quickly on his campaign promises and roll back his predecessor’s policies. As his second term begins, his party controls both chambers of Congress and conservative justices have a majority on the Supreme Court. Trump is only the second president to return to office in non-consecutive terms, the only president convicted of a felony and the oldest person to win election to the White House.
