0:37Now PlayingRetired Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan Caine denied he had ever worn a MAGA hat, during his confirmation hearing Tuesday for Joint Chiefs of Staff.
President Donald Trump has claimed Caine put on a "Make American Great Again" hat when they first met in 2018 during the president's visit to see troops in Iraq.
Caine, a retired Air Force pilot, disputes that story, saying he thinks Trump was "talking about somebody else."
Service members must be nonpolitical and are bound to the Constitution.
According to the Department of Defense's policy, "active duty members are specifically prohibited from engaging in partisan political activity, and all members of the Armed Forces should always avoid actions that could reasonably be perceived as implying DoD sponsorship, approval, or endorsement of partisan political activity."
“For 34 years, I’ve upheld my oath of office and my commitment to my commission. And I have never worn any political merchandise," Caine said.
