2:14Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump said Monday that "many countries" have approached the United States to negotiate trade deals following his issuing of broad-stroke tariffs last week.
“We have many, many countries that are coming to negotiate deals with us and they're going to be fair deals and in certain cases they're going to be paying substantial tariffs,” Trump told reporters at the White House during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump added that China would face more tariffs after the country issued an additional 34-percent tariff in retaliation against the president’s measures.
Trump announced broad tariffs on nations around the world, including Israel, on April 2. Ahead of the announcement, Israel had made overtures to the U.S. by cutting some tariffs on U.S. products. The country was still hit with a 17-percent tariff.
Netanyahu’s April visit was his second to the White House since Trump returned to power. During the prime minister’s February visit, Trump made a surprise proposal for the U.S. to take over Gaza and resettle the more than 2 million Palestinians living there, an idea that drew pushback from neighboring nations, the UN and human rights organizations. In the days that followed, White House officials suggested such a relocation would be temporary.
